Technical Trainers - What Is The Standard? August 15th, 2006

While it is fresh in my mind, I thought I would record some observations on my coaching session yesterday at a local internet retailer. This was working with a technical trainer in their online fraud prevention and investigations unit. The skillset my subject was hired for involves interviewing subject matter experts (SME’s) and translating their experience into manuals and short training programs for new hires, and as systems evolve and are upgraded to do enhancement/refresher training.
What they didn’t do was give my subject a stand-up-delivery test. But, realistically, delivering in a monotone and without any humor or use of audience-involvement techniques probably wouldn’t have been required. The standard for this type of training is consistently low. If you speak in a monotone you show you’re not wildly enthusiastic about your work or the company, but there’s a subculture of low-affect in the technical areas of many companies. As a technical trainer at Weyerhaeuser told me last month: “If a nail stands out too much it’s the first to get hit with the hammer.” This is a useful metaphor, and I am interested in other similar metaphors and aphorisms. Anyone got one to share?
